Purpose: Assist and offer ideas about how to keep current and stay connected through life-long learning and professional collaboration.

“Students will be able to communicate effectively and appropriately both verbally and in writing with patients, family members of patients, colleagues, other health professionals and relevant others” (KU School of Medicine Professionalism Initiative, http://kumc.edu/som/professionalism.html).

Purpose: To provide information for professionals in how to collect references, publish and protect intellectual property.

Upon completion of the module, participant will be able to:

Applying — Evidence-based practice

“Workable solutions cannot be developed from the knowledge base in the absence of those who will apply the knowledge” (Armstrong & Kendall, 2010, p. 15).

Purpose: To provide health care practitioners or students who need a basic introduction to or refresher of the basic concepts of Evidence-Based Practice.

Upon completion of the module, participant will be able to:

  • Define: Evidence –based Medicine (EBM) and Evidence-Based Practice (EBP), Evidence-based individual decision (EBID), Evidence-based guidelines (EBG), PICO, hierarchy of medical evidence, critical appraisal
  • List: 5 reasons EBP is important to healthcare providers and patients 
  • Identify: 4 elements of a PICO question 
  • Write: A PICO question using appropriate search terms 
  • Recognize: Medical statistics relevant to the clinical question 
  • Identify: The hierarchy of medical evidence 
  • Apply: Medical information to patient care
