Camp Pathological

Camp Pathological is a 5-week inquiry-based biomedical science program for 25 underrepresented minority or underserved 11th and12th grade students. Each summer an innovative, content-rich, age-appropriate pathology-based curriculum is developed and taught by multidisciplinary faculty from the Kansas University Medical Center; instructors from Kansas City, Kansas Community College math and science departments; and Kansas City, Kansas USD 500 master teachers.

Problem based learning, standardized patients, and electronic health records are utilized to teach the pathologic basis of disease and to demonstrate how this knowledge guides diagnosis, management and prognostication. Each summer emphasis is placed on a specific health disparity issue, incorporating problem- or case-based learning techniques and cultural proficiency education. The topic for Year One was the healthy reproductive body, its pathological condition, its diagnostic research, and treatment.
